DIGITIZATION

Our Scanning & Digitizing Center can scan and digitize un-digitized media such as old photos, VHS, 8mm and Super8mm films. Customers should label each piece to insure the safe return of all media. Please note: digitizing old videos is possible, but it is time consuming, expensive and the quality remains only as good as when it was taken. The result is not HD or hi-resolution as todays video cameras. Once digitized, yes, they can become a part of the new video. It is highly recommended, however, that the client give Family Tree Videos a generous “artistic license “ to judge how much of the old videos to play. Generally, small snippets can be added while maintaining a high film quality.  Pricing on video conversion is based on footage and pricing for old photos over a quantity of 20 must be custom quoted.

STILL PHOTOS

Once digitized, any still photo can become a part of your final video. Still photos used as an overlay that relate to the speaker’s topic make for a more interesting piece. For example, if the subject is discussing her childhood, still photos of her childhood can be inserted into the frame as she speaks. Depending on the plan you choose, you can have 5, 10, or 20 still photos in the final edited video.

BACKGROUND MUSIC

Music is a wonderful way to add emotion and entertainment into film. We excel at finding the right music that fits the story and the personality of the subject.  Because of copyright laws that pertain to music, we are limited to using royalty free music. We add music at the start and conclusion of each video and in all of our trailers.

GRAPHIC RESEARCH

Sometimes the speaker may be discussing a beloved memory for which a still image is not available. Say, for example, that she is talking about her college days at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. For those occasions when a still photo or graphic would be a great compliment to the film, we will search for and use royalty free images such as a photo of the campus in Amherst.

GENEALOGY RESEARCH

There is something incredibly powerful in seeing a loved one recorded as part of history and to understand what the times they lived in were like.  Through our services, we will work with you to research your family tree in order to find the ancestral records that track your family backwards in time using records like the census, draft registration records and other records that may be available.  These records of your ancestral heritage are graphically presented in your video as a family tree and are also packaged and delivered as a bound keepsake. VIDEOGRAPHY

Our videographers are trained specialists who love to be behind the camera. They all have had at least five years of experience and many come from commercial settings. All of our videographers are skilled in and have knowledge of numerous filming styles and techniques and are comfortable working with families to make sure your shoot runs smoothly and successfully.

EDITING HOURS

Our post-production team of video editors all have solid and proven experience with digital technology and editing software packages such as Avid Media Composer, Lightworks, Premiere, After Effects and Final Cut Pro. Their knowledge, skills, and abilities include knowledge of timing, motivation and continuity, familiarity with special effects and compositing and a creative mind with storytelling skills.

THE SHOOT

Our website provides a “storyboard” resource to help plan the shoot. Important questions to ask are noted along with stories, photos, people and events to reminisce. The filming usually begins with an introduction of the subject(s) by a lead family member followed by an introduction of other friends or family present. For shoots without a Director present, one family member typically begins by asking a few simple questions about the subject’s life such as birth location, location of childhood, tell us about your childhood. What is your favorite childhood experience? From that point the storyboard helps the entire audience to ask questions or give anecdotes they remember pertaining to the subject and the shoot takes on a life of its own. For shoots with a Director, the Director helps the discussion keep moving by inserting follow up questions as needed.  It’s important to remember that your video will be watched by future generations so you can also talk about what’s going on in the world, politics, predictions, etc. Refer to our Life Story Questionnaire for some great ideas on important questions to ask.

STORYBOARDING

Prior to the shoot, members of your family should each have a chance to collaborate on the storyboard document that is included with each shoot. The storyboard is a helpful guide to plan the shoot. It should be completed online for our videographers and directors to see prior to the shoot. As you will see, the storyboard document helps you to outline the areas of the subject’s life on which you’d like to focus, what questions to ask, and what stories, photos, people and events to reminisce. All families have those annual stories that are repeated at the holiday get-togethers. Jot those down so you don’t forget to ask such as, “Mom, tell us that funny story about the time you and Dad got lost in Texas.”

LIFE STORY QUESTIONNAIRE

Our Life Story Questionnaire is a compilation of many interesting questions that one can answer to leave a detailed account of their life and legacy. Questions are divided into categories that may pertain to their interests and life experience. Categories include: Aspirations, Family, Secrets, Motherhood, Bucket List, Family Tree, Childhood, Favorites, High School Years, Achievements, Romance, Predictions, Marriage, Parenthood, Military, Career and more. The Life Story Questionnaire is sold online for $49 or is included at no charge with the Professional 2 Tribute Video.

NARRATED INTRODUCTION

AERIAL VIEWS

As an optional feature, we offer Aerial photography and videography to those families who would like to document the exterior of a home, or a wedding location, school, campus or other meaningful place in their life. Still photos or videos are then included in the video at a time when the subject is talking about that location. Aerial views are limited to local areas or travel fees will need to be included.

KEN BURNS EFFECT

The feature enables a widely used technique of embedding still photographs in motion pictures, displayed with slow zooming and panning effects, and fading transitions between frames. The Ken Burns effect is a type of panning and zooming effect used in video production from still imagery. The name derives from extensive use of the technique by American documentarian Ken Burns.

MONTAGES

A montage is a sequence of shots assembled in juxtaposition to each other to communicate a particular idea or mood. Often bridged with cross-fades and set to music. If we have your digitized photos of the subject’s childhood, for example, we will create a montage in the video as the subject is talking about his/her childhood.

LIP SYNC

Lip sync is the proper synchronization of video with audio, lip movement with audible speech.

SAFE TITLE AREA

Safe title area is the recommended area that will produce legible titles on most TV screens; 80 percent of the visible area, measured from the center.

FAMILY TITLE END ROLL

Roll is text or graphics, usually credits, that move up or down the screen, typically from bottom to top. We will include the names and relationship of the people included in the video while they are speaking and at the conclusion of the video as an end roll.

FAMILY MEMBER TITLING

As new friends or family members are speaking during the shoot, their name and relationship to the subject is titled onto the page.

DIRECTOR

For shoots with a Director on site, the Director helps the discussion keep moving by inserting follow up questions as needed.  It’s important to remember that your video will be watched by future generations so the Director may ask some questions about the subject’s opinion on what’s going on in the world, politics, predictions, etc. Refer to our Life Story Questionnaire for some great ideas on important questions to ask.
